Ikie H. Henderson earned her angel’s wings on Thursday, April 4, 2024, in the arms of her beloved only child, Raye.

Ms. Ikie was a graduate of Jena High School and the Alexandria Business College. She was a 75-year resident of Harrisonburg. In 1950, she married the love of her life, J.C. Henderson. They were married for 45 years. Her professional life included serving Catahoula Parish Deputy Clerk of Court for 37 years; she also worked in several capacities with the Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Born June 11, 1930, in Walters, Louisiana, raised in Whitehall, Louisiana, Ms. Ikie was a lifetime devoted Pentecostal, having departed this life as a member of Rosin Creek Pentecostal Church. Among her services to her churches, she played piano and acted as church secretary. With her sisters, Ms. Ikie was a founder of the Catahoula-LaSalle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served in every office of that chapter and regularly attended the state conventions.

This lively, remarkable, and energetic lady had wide-ranging interests and service projects, including traveling, attending many Bluegrass festivals across a number of states, crafting ceramics, visiting friends and family, reading, and painting. She loved visiting her nieces and their families in Arkansas and Florida. She also volunteered to serve on the Board for Council on Aging and the Homemakers Club.

Ms. Ikie was preceded in death by her husband; parents, Ike E. Hailey and Bennie Mae Johnson Hailey; her siblings, Beth H. May, Earl Hailey Sr., Shine H. Walker, Cora Belle Hailey, and Georgia H. Jones; special grands, David L. Jones, Sr., Jennifer W. Groll, Jeff Walker, George Wesley Hailey, Aaron Hailey, and Katri Billiot.

She is survived by her daughter, Raye Henderson; sister, Teen H. Davidson; and a host of nieces, nephews, grands, and greatgrands, the latter of whom considered her a grandmother.

A graveside service was held on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 11 am in the Harrisonburg Cemetery, a brief visitation was at 10. Tommy Mayo read the obituary, Reverend Lionel Hatten conducted the eulogy, and LeJeune Mayo was the vocalist. Following the service there was an informal gathering of family and friends with light refreshments at Bailey’s Coffee Shop in Harrisonburg.

Pallbearers were Scott Maxfield, BJ Book, Lauren May Calk, Alexandra Hailey Maxfield, Gage Dossett, and Drew Bass.

Ms. Ikie requested that those wishing to honor her memory send memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

The family would like to thank All Saints Hospice and Faye Henderson for their devotion for and care of Ms. Ikie in her final months. We will be forever grateful.
