Catahoula Parish was classified as a 331 Hospital, designed as a complete health care facility. It included different health services within one building including, diagnostics, surgical, patient care, delivery, nursery, emergency administration, services areas and pharmacies.
The hospital was designed and constructed around 1967 as a parish owned hospital and was completed January 1970, opened April, 1970. The hospital contains 35,785 sq. ft and was licensed for 49 beds. At one time we had a total of 21 doctors serving The Parish Catahoula Hospital and Sicily Island.
The hospital closed on March 1st, 1986 and was then leased to Rapides Parish Hospital in March 1986 but closed again only seven months later on October 16, 1987.
After Rapides left it was leased to Paul Majors, he kept it open for a few months. After he left Catahoula Connection opened it for a few months. After CCC left Ex. Gov. Bobby Freeman opened a Juvenile home for Boys and Girls in trouble. Then LaSalle Hospital opened the West Wing for a while.
Today the hospital building is home to Four Rivers Home Health, Miss Lou Physical Therapy, New Beginnings Operating, Kid Care Clinic, and an Orthodontist Dentist.
I have been looking after the hospital for 30 something years, the building is part of me. I remember when talk started about the hospital closing and people would say that it was just talk. That the hospital would not close. Then after it closed people knew it would have an impact on the parish and it did. The reason the hospital closed is a sad story. Several companies opened the building but none could make it work. Now we have someone who I think can and will give the parish a hospital again. We all need to pray, get behind it, and make this a reality because good things are in store for the future.
