It was Tigers vs Tigers Friday night as Sicily Island hosted LaSalle High School. Sicily Island took the win in that contest with a score of 24-19.
First quarter of action was an exciting one! Sicily Island starts the scoring with a 56-yard touchdown pass from Austin Polk to Keonte Dunbar. After a failed two-point conversion the score was 6-0 SIHS.
LaSalle came to play though as they answered the Tigers touchdown with a Tigers touchdown. With 8 minuets left in the first quarter Lasalle scored and the PAT was no good the game was knotted at 6 apiece.
That score wouldn’t last long.
Sicily Island’s Landrea James took the kickoff all the way back for the touchdown. It was a return of 75 yards and gave SIHS a 12-6 lead. The scoring isn’t over yet though.
Still in the first quarter, LaSalle driving the ball down field, throws a pick 6. The pass was intercepted by Ricky Tolliver Jr. and he returned it 52 yards for the score. SIHS failed to convert the tw0-point conversion but found themselves with an 18-6 lead over LaSalle.
After an exciting first quarter the teams decided to slow it down a bit. Nobody scored in the second quarter so the score at halftime was SIHS 18 LaSalle 6.
Second half, LaSalle trying to fight their way back into it, scored first in the third quarter. The PAT was good and LaSalle pulled it within 5 points at 18-13.
With 2:37 remaining in the third quarter Sicily Island’s Landrea James would once again find the end zone. This time James broke off a 52-yard running score. The score was 24-13 going into the fourth quarter.
LaSalle scored once in the fourth quarter, but Sicily Island’s defense would stay true and get them the win with the final score 24-19.
The key to SIHS win this week was their defense as they forced 4 turnovers (one forced fumble recovery and 3 interceptins). That defense performance partners well with yet another great rushing attack. Sicily Island piled up 228 yards on the ground. That’s two weeks in a row with more than 225 rushing yards.
Sicily Island (2-0) will play again at home this Friday, September 20, vs Ferriday High School (1-1). That game is scheduled to kick off at 7pm.
