When God spoke the universe into being, he established rules regarding the interaction of its components. Through the years men have observed the interactions of the substance of creation and have come to recognize and define many of the laws of physics. By following these laws men have devised and built the conveniences we enjoy daily. We may build boats that float, planes that fly and thousands of other wonders if we design them according to the laws of physics. The opposite is also true, and there are no exemptions. These laws are absolute and firm. When the design violates the laws of physics, tragedy results.
It should not be remarkable that God has also established laws of human behavior. We find them recorded in the bible. When a person learns and follows God’s plan of conduct, happiness and contentment result. In Psalms 19:7-11 the Psalmist wrote:
The instruction of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord
Is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise.
The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the commandment of the
Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up.
The Fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous.
They are more desirable than gold – than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter
Than honey – than honey dripping from the comb.
In addition, Your servant is warned by them; there is great reward in keeping them.
The reverse is also true. Disobedience to God’s laws will always result in pain and suffering.
We mortals quickly learn to obey the laws of physics. To violate them brings immediate harm. There is, however, often a delay in the consequences when we disobey God’s instructions. We may think we have escaped, but sin bears its bitter fruit in season. Furthermore God is patient and loving. He does not wish to see pain come to his people; but will let it come, if we continue in disobedience. The Apostle Paul wrote, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
The bible has been given to mankind by the almighty, all knowing, ever present God. In the original language of the bible The first word is Elohim, the name for God. The bible contains all the information we need to learn of God and His purpose for His creation. It informs, instructs, cautions, condemns, convicts and leads one to salvation. The bible tells us how we might come to know God personally. Consider what the scriptures say about how God reveals himself to His creatures:
God the Father is revealed in the creation. (Romans 1:20; Psalm 19:1)
God the Son is revealed by the incarnate Jesus. (John 14:8-9; Colossians 1:13-19)
God the Holy Spirit reveals Himself by imparting power to believers. (Acts 1:8; 2:17-19)
The bible informs us of the facts of creation (Genesis 1)
The purpose of creation. ((Jeremiah 13:11; Isaiah 43:7; Matthew 5:16)
The source of evil (John 8:44)
The prevalence of evil (I Peter 5:8; Romans 3:23)
The fate of evil doers (Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:12-15)
The love of God (John 3:16; Romans 5:8)
The grace of God (Ephesians 2:4-9; Psalm 103:8-14)
The promises of God (I Peter 1:3-5; Matthew 28:20)
The blessings of God (I Peter 4:10; Psalm 105:1-5)
The protection of God (Isaiah 49:8; II Timothy 4:18; Psalm 92:1-11)
Appliance manufacturers provide a manual to guide one in the proper use for the maximum benefit. The bible is God’s instruction manual for his creation. Following God’s instructions results a happy productive life. Ignoring it brings disappointment.
