Families with young children are invited to attend “Read to Soar” workshops beginning Monday, October 2, at the Harrisonburg Branch of the Catahoula Parish Library. Sessions are free of charge for young children and parents.
“Read to Soar” is a free, eight-session reading program for children from birth to age five and their parents or caregivers. It prepares children for school success by cultivating a love for reading long before they set foot in a classroom. The workshops also teach families how to reinforce the learning at home so children will be prepared when they enter kindergarten.
Families receive five books after each session. If a family attends all eight sessions, they will have forty new books to build their home library. Participants earn a certificate and book bag after completing the program.
Each session focuses on a different topic and is designed to be fun, giving parents and caregivers a chance to bond with their kids in a learning environment. Sessions include music, dancing, crafts, and refreshments.
“Read to Soar” is administered by The Orchard Foundation, the education arm of The Rapides Foundation.
Sessions will be at the Harrisonburg Branch of the Catahoula Parish Library from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the following Mondays: October 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, and November 6, 13 and 20.
There is no charge to attend, but registration is required. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Contact instructor Diana Price to register by texting or calling (318) 235-2982 or emailing her at orchard3@ theorchardfoundation. org To learn more, visit theorchardfoundation. org/ReadToSoar.
