Local and state political campaign contributions now available to public

Money is necessary for campaigns for candidates to play their part in the political process and voters are entitled to this information. The Campaign Finance Disclosure Act (R.S. 18:1481 et seq.) requires reports of campaign contributions and expenditures for candidates and political committees. Louisiana candidates were mandated to disclose campaign contributions and expenditures thirty days prior to the primary election to ensure ethical conduct at all levels. All financial reports were due on September 14, 2023.

Even when candidates use their personal funds for campaign purposes, they are making contributions to their campaigns. Although candidate contributions to their own campaigns are not subject to any limits they must be reported.

Contributions, including in-kind contributions from outside sources valued over $25, must also be reported. Included in the report must be the full name and address of each person who has made one or more contributions to them, the date and amount of each contribution, and the total amount of such contributions from each person.
