Matthew Benjamin Taunton

Matthew Benjamin Taunton, lovingly known as Matt, passed away on December 21, 2025 at the age of 47. A resident of Monterey, Louisiana, Matt lived a life defined by service, faith, family, and an unwavering love for his community.

Funeral services for Matt were held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at New Era Baptist Church at noon with Bro. Dustin Davis. The family received friends on Tuesday at the church from 10am until service time at noon. He will be laid to rest at New Era Baptist Church Cemetery, under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.

Matt dedicated more than two decades of his life to public service as a firefighter and first responder. His career began in June 2000 with Natchitoches Fire Department, where he laid the foundation for a calling he deeply loved. From July 2001 to 2007, he served with AMR in Monroe, while also joining the Ouachita Fire Department in 2004. In January 2009, Matt joined the Vidalia Fire Department, where he rose through the ranks and proudly served as C Shift Battalion Chief. In addition, he faithfully served as Fire Chief of the Monterey Fire Protection District #1.

Throughout his career, Matt earned numerous certifications, including EMT, Haz Mat Awareness and Operations, Firefighter I & II, Driver Operator, Aerial Driver Operator, Fire Service Instructor I, Fire Officer I, and NFPA Confined Space and Rope Rescue Technician. Matt loved his career and truly considered his crew family. His leadership, courage, and compassion left a lasting impact on every department and community he served.

Beyond his professional life, Matt was deeply committed to civic service. He proudly served as a Concordia Parish School Board Member for District 5-B, driven by his desire to help strengthen opportunities for children and families across the parish. His sense of duty extended into his faith as a devoted member of New Era Baptist Church, where he cherished his church family and lived out his faith through service to others.

Above all else, Matt’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and son whose love was steady, selfless, and unconditional. He is survived by his beloved wife of 15 years, Jamie Mumphrey Taunton, of Monterey, and his children, Molly Taunton, Alex Taunton, Isabella Taunton, Jake Crawford, and Arden Crawford, who were the pride of his life.

He is also survived by his parents, Ben and Connie Taunton of Monterey, and Mary Lynn and Clint Wilkerson of Monroe, Louisiana; his sister, Katie Smith (Jere) of West Monroe; his nephew, Ben Smith, and niece, Macy Poe, both of West Monroe; mother- in-law, Joyce Mumphrey, of Monterey, Louisiana; sistersin- law Jennifer Gill (Jason) of Dunlap, Tennessee, and Sharon Norton (Tim) of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; brothers- in-law Ronald Rougeau of Hockley, Texas, and Richard Rougeau (Lindsay) of Alexandria, Louisiana; his goddaughter, Quinn Noel of Pineville, Louisiana; along with numerous Taunton cousins and nieces and nephews on Jamie’s side of the family whom he loved dearly.

Matt was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jack and Iris Taunton; his maternal grandparents, Raymond and Rowena Mason; Olan and Myrtle Wilkerson; and his father-in-law, Jim Mumphrey.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Jason Noel, Drue Beach, Hunter Hinson, Elderrious King, Robert Walker, Vick Brown, Tim Vanier, and Jere Smith.

Matt Taunton will be remembered as a servant leader, a faithful man, a brother in the fire service, and a loving family man whose legacy of courage, compassion, and commitment will live on in the many lives he touched. His example reminds us all of what it means to serve with heart, humility, and purpose.
