Hooked On History

Body
Searching through old newspapers, I found a reference to a local paper I had never heard of before. The Harrisonburg New Era. Digging a little deeper into the history of the newspapers, it seems it was first published in 1866. William Lego Ditto was the first editor, and the newspaper was published by Walker and Gibson. The New Era had a reported circulation of 150 issues and was published on Wednesdays on a weekly basis. Samuel Duke Stone Walker assumed the role of editor in 1869. It appears the paper was still in publication until around 1871. Mr. S. D. S. Walker would move to Caldwell Parish and would be the editor of the Caldwell Watchman newspaper for 12 years. I did find one reference to the Harrisonburg New Era dated 1908, but nothing else between the 1870s and that time.

From Where I Sit

I know as a child Halloween was one of my favorite days celebrated. Not because I loved dressing up or being scared. Just simply because of all the candy that was passed out! I am not sure about other people my age, but my parents very rarely allowed us to have massive amounts of candy.

Weekly Devotion

Body
Have you failed to believe in yourself at times? I recently graduated from Louisiana Christian University, but there was a time when I failed to believe I would succeed. I knew God called me to it, but I was doubtful. Jeremiah had doubts too.

I first started Annaline in pageants to help her break out of her shyness. She is basically an only child since Mary-Kate and Carree are already married. I wanted her to do something where she would make friends. Another reason was for her to not be afraid to let her inner beauty shine as much as her outward beauty. I was not prepared for the profound impact pageants would have on both our lives.

Chief Madison endorses Toney Edwards for Sheriff

Body
My name is Chief Richard Madison and for the past three years I have been the Chief of Police for the Town of Jonesville. I have served under three mayors. I have 52 years of experience in law enforcement, starting my career with military police while in the military. I also have experience in patrol, probation, arson investigation, and as a school resource officer. Speaking as a man with 30 years of military experience, I believe Sheriff Toney Edwards is the most qualified candidate for Sheriff of Catahoula Parish.

Football season is once again in high gear with kick off this weekend starting with high school, then college, and of course, the NFL. Athletes lay it on the line every week for their fans. I must admit that I am one of those diehard fans that will take in as many games as possible. There is so much extreme talent on display from the want to be extra ordinary high school players to the healthy paid professional NFL players. Make no mistake about it, the players take a lot of abuse with the physicality of the game.

More Than Just “Convenience”: Online Access to Public Records Must Be Truly Public

Body
I was troubled to read Larisa Field's response regarding the fees the Catahoula Parish Clerk of Court's office is charging for online access to public records. Additionally troubling, Ms. Field does not address the fact that the paid online access only includes land records dating back to 1975, restricting digital access to other types of public documents and barring more comprehensive historical research.
